Elisabeth Gordon Chandler was born in St. Louis, Missouri on June 10, 1913. She graduated from the Lenox School, New York City. Her interest in sculpture began in 1939. She studied sculpture privately with Edmondo Quattrocchi. She also studied anatomy at the Art Students League under Robert Beverly Hale. In 1946 she married Robert Kirtland Chandler.
Her sculpture "Victory" which she started shortly after Pearl Harbor was meant to symbolize the victory of youth over war. It was awarded first prize in the Brooklyn War Memorial Competition. However, the final sculpture was never carried out and thus, it remained a working model.
She was Director of the American Artist Societies and of the American Artists Professional League from 1971-74. She was Recording Secretary for the National Sculpture Society from 1973-76. Chandler was Vice President of the Lyme Art Association from 1973-75 and President from 1975-78. In 1976 she became a Trustee of the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts. She began working as an instructor of Portrait Sculpture at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in 1977.
She was widowed in 1967. She married sculptor Laci de Gerenday in 1979.
Among her principal works are: Queen Anne, Queen Anne’s County Courthouse Square, MD, Chief Justice Harlan Fiske Stone, Columbia University School of Law, Chief Justice Charles Evan Hughes, Columbia University School of Law, Albert A. Michelson, Hall of Fame for Great Americans, New York University, Charles Coburn, Mid-Georgia Regional Library, Georgia, Awakening Diana, Storm King Art Center, New York, and School Seal, The Lenox School, New York City.
Her exhibitions include National Academy of Design, National Sculpture Society, National Arts Club, Allied Artists of America, Hudson Valley Art Association, American Artists Professional League, Pen & Brush, Knickerbocker Artists, Mattituck Museum, Smithsonian Institute, Audubon Artists, Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, and the U S Information Service Traveling Exhibit.
She has been the recipient of many awards including those from the National Academy of Design, National Sculpture Society, Allied Artists, as well as numerous Gold Medals and other prizes.
